Service restored after severed fiber keeps 911 out of reach for some in Tarrant County

For the second time in a week, some Tarrant County AT&T customers could not make 911 emergency calls Tuesday.

Fort Worth police tweeted about the outage about 11 a.m. A map tweeted by the department indicated the outage centered around parts of Tarrant County east of Eagle Mountain Lake, including a sliver of northwest Fort Worth. The outage impacted landlines, not cell service, the department said.

At 7 p.m., AT&T spokesman Jim Greer reported that service had been restored. The outage was caused when a member of a road crew cut fiber, he said.

“We worked as quickly as possible to repair the damage and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,” Greer wrote in an email.

The police department’s non-emergency number is 817-392-4222.

Other departments also reported 911 problems Tuesday.

The Farmers Branch and Roanoke police departments tweeted that Charter Communications landline customers could not make 911 calls. That problem appeared to be fixed by 11:50 a.m.

This is the second time Tarrant County AT&T customers have been unable to call 911 since July 2. That day an outage prevented calls for about three hours and only impacted cell customers. The outages were not related, Greer said.
