Mother of baby found buried in flowerpot identified, Texas police say
An 18-year-old has come forward and identified herself as the mother of the baby found buried in a flowerpot and placed in a cemetery, Carrollton police said Monday.
The teen, who is not in custody, came forward Friday morning.
She contacted Carrollton police after seeing news coverage of the incident.
Carrollton police did not release any other details about the teen.
“Detectives are still investigating the circumstances, awaiting test results and awaiting consultation with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office,” said Carrollton police spokeswoman Jolene DeVito in a Monday email.
An employee at Perry Cemetery, 1805 N. Perry Road, in Carrollton, found the baby girl on March 11.
A caretaker emptied the flowerpot after finding that it was out of place at the cemetery, Carrollton police said. The baby’s body was found under the soil.
Officials with the medical examiner’s office later determined the baby was 34 weeks to full term with the umbilical cord still attached.
Carrollton police said the baby’s race could not definitely be determined, and they were awaiting additional tests to determine whether she was born alive.
The caretaker told Carrollton police the flowerpot was placed at the cemetery sometime between Feb. 27 and March 2.
