A violent fight between two students at a North Texas school Tuesday morning was caught on camera, and the video is making the rounds on social media and sparking outrage from concerned parents.

The Bedford Police Department said one of its officers responded to the scene at Harwood Junior High, in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district, while acting in the capacity of school resource officer.

The officer was called to a fight in progress shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 25. Police said in a social media post on Thursday, March 27, that when the officer arrived, a staff member was trying to separate the students and the officer immediately took control of one of them.

The school nurse arrived and treated the other student for injuries, according to the police post. It’s not clear how serious his injuries were.

Video shows part of fight

In a video showing about 30 seconds of the fight, one boy can be seen sitting astride another boy, who is lying flat on his back. The boy on top pummels him repeatedly with both fists. The boy on the bottom tries to get away, but the one on top continues to hit him.

A group of students watches the fight. A man approaches and tries to get control of the boy on top. The boy keeps punching the other student, who puts his arms up to defend himself. Another man unsuccessfully attempts to grab an arm of the boy on top.

The two are finally separated, and the boy on the bottom can be seen lying still on the ground.

HEB ISD school principal calls fight ‘unacceptable’

Toby Givens, the principal of Harwood, sent a letter to families notifying them of the “violent incident” that took place in an interior courtyard of the school.

“Within 60 seconds of the beginning of the fight, the school’s resource officer and nurse were in the courtyard to secure the scene and provide medical attention as needed,” the letter states.

Givens called the fight “completely unacceptable,” and said HEB ISD school officials are taking the incident very seriously. They are investigating what led up to the fight and looking into the actions of students and staff at the scene.

“Be assured that anyone involved in fighting will receive consequences in line with the Student Code of Conduct, and can also experience consequences through the legal system as determined by law enforcement,” Givens said in the letter.

The Bedford Police Department also investigated the fight and “made its referral to the Tarrant County Juvenile Justice Center,” according to the department’s post.

Givens said school officials are taking steps to ensure they have processes and training in place to prevent future incidents. Students who are concerned about the situation are encouraged to visit the campus counselor.
