Granbury middle school combating repeated incidents of harassment, racial slurs
A Granbury middle school is trying to combat repeated student harassment involving “inappropriate language and racial slurs,” according to a statement sent to parents on Monday.
Several instances of name-calling, offensive jokes and other forms of harassment occurred at Acton Middle School, according to Principal Jennifer Pennington.
“This type of behavior is not tolerated and will be addressed by campus administration immediately,” she said.
Parents have been asking Granbury schools to stop racial harassment all year long, Adrienne Quinn Martin, Democratic Chair of Hood County, said in a tweet.
“After my nephew was racially targeted at the high school, I started calling my friends who had children of color in the district,” she said. “Every single one of them had the same stories.”
Pennington said the school held a faculty meeting Monday to discuss preventative measures and better support students.
She said an announcement was made to the student body reminding them of expectations, and teachers reviewed the harassment policy each class period.
In the 2020-2021 school year, Granbury students were 68.9% white, 25.4% Hispanic and 1.4% African American, according to the Texas Education Agency.
