Garland police, FBI, respond to threats made at North Texas high school
Students who made threats to kill and injure students at a North Texas high school have been suspended, officials said.
Garland police, with help from the FBI and North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force, responded to an online threat that a group of students planned to harm classmates at Naaman Forest High School, police said.
On Friday morning, FBI agents “executed search warrants and interviewed the students involved in these threats,” a news release from the Garland Police Department said. “Based on the investigation, it was determined that there is no immediate threat to the school.”
Police said that all students involved had been “indefinitely suspended and are no longer allowed on any GISD school property.” The police department did not say how many students were involved in the threats.
“Threats of violence will not be tolerated,” the police department said. “The Garland Police Department, the FBI, and GISD will continue to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”
The police department also said that it plans to increase patrols at its campuses in the school district until the end of the school year.
Garland police directed additional questions to the FBI. Citing an ongoing investigation, an FBI spokesperson said she couldn’t share any further details — including how many students were involved, what grade levels they were in, what exact threats were made, how law enforcement found out about the threats and if there are any criminal charges planned against the students who law enforcement said made the threats.
“Because the investigation continues, we are limited in providing additional information,” Katie Chaumont, an FBI spokeswoman at the Dallas field office, said. “I can confirm multiple students were identified.”
Chaumont said the FBI wants to encourage people to report any school threat-related tips to local police, local FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov.
