Dallas city manager names former DEA agent as police department’s new chief
The Dallas city manager has named a new police chief, the city announced on Friday.
Daniel Comeaux will take over as the Dallas’ 31st chief of police on Wednesday April 23, according to a statement from City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert’s office.
Comeaux currently serves as the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s Houston Field Division and brings with him 33 years of law enforcement experience, according to the statement.
The hiring comes nearly six months after previous chief Eddie Garcia left the department to take a job in the Austin city manager’s office.
A New Orleans native, Comeaux began his law enforcement career with the Houston Police Department in 1991, where he specialized in community policing, narcotics enforcement and high-risk investigations, according to the news release.
He joined the DEA in 1997 and led major operations that targeted violent crime and drug trafficking, officials said.
Comeaux’s strategies resulted in a 40% reduction in overdose deaths in Laredo, according to the statement.
“At the federal level, I am known as the local cop because of my collaborative approach to tackling crime and my dedication to developing leaders in public safety who are bridge builders for the community,” Comeaux said. “I am proud that my career in law enforcement has come full circle and look forward to serving alongside the men and women of the Dallas Police Department.”
