Officer shoots man who pointed rifle following traffic accident in Dallas, police say
A plain-clothes Plano police officer opened fire on a man armed with a long rifle Thursday morning in a Dallas neighborhood after the officer saw the suspect retrieve the weapon following a traffic accident, Dallas police said.
The suspect was shot in the arm after he pointed the rifle at the Plano officer, police said.
The wounded man fled the scene, but he was located a few minutes later when a Dallas resident reported a suspicious person in their backyard.
The wounded man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Dallas police said.
Dallas police did not identify the Plano officer or the wounded man.
The incident occurred about 7:15 a.m. at Bonnie View Road and Tioga Street in Dallas.
The Plano officer was driving through the area and noticed a traffic accident at the intersection.
The Plano police officer saw a man who had been involved in the wreck get out of his vehicle and grab the rifle out of the backseat, Dallas police said.
Dallas police said the Plano officer stopped out of concern and confronted the armed man.
Witnesses told Dallas police the Plano officer identified himself as a police officer and ordered the man to stop.
The armed man walked away, but at some point, he turned and pointed his rifle at the Plano officer, police said.
At that point, the Plano officer shot the man, Dallas police said.
The shooting will be investigated by Dallas police because the incident occurred in a Dallas neighborhood.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, Plano police said.
