Man exchanges gunfire with Dallas-area police officer after allegedly shooting brother
A man suspected of shooting and critically injuring his brother in Carrollton on Monday afternoon fired several rounds toward a police officer in Grand Prairie in the evening, authorities said.
The officer, who wasn’t hit by the gunfire, returned fire at the suspect, identified as Alvin Leroy Hemphill III, 28, according to Grand Prairie police. Neither the officer nor the suspect were injured.
Hemphill ran away but was quickly apprehended, the department said. Grand Prairie police charged him with aggravated assault against a public servant, and Carralton police charged him with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The Grand Prairie officer who fired toward Hemphill has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
The first incident involving Hemphill on Monday happened around 2:30 p.m., when officers in Carrollton responded to calls about a disturbance at the Intown Suites on West Trinity Mills Road, police said in a news release. They reportedly found a 35-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck.
They determined Hemphill, the victim’s brother, shot him, and the victim’s fiance also told police he fired two shots in her direction but missed.
Hemphill fled in the woman’s vehicle and Carrollton police sent out an area-wide alert to law enforcement with information on the suspect and the vehicle he was driving.
Around 7:25 p.m., a Grand Prairie officer saw a man walking along the westbound I-20 service road near Great Southwest Parkway, the department said.
The suspect didn’t comply with the officer’s commands, police said, and fired his weapon multiple times in the officer’s direction without hitting him.
Police didn’t describe what commands the officer gave Hemphill.
The officer returned fire but missed Hemphill, police said.
After police captured Hemphill, he was booked into the Grand Prairie Detention Center. He had been out on bond for unrelated charges of resisting arrest and evading arrest in Dallas County, police said.
