Two police officers were wounded in Rowlett after a suspect hijacked a DART bus and led police on a chase on Sunday morning, Garland police said.
At about 11 a.m., a suspect got onto a Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus at Buckingham Road in Richardson. He held the driver at gunpoint and forced him to drive, Garland police said in a press release. The suspect fired at officers pursuing the bus and a DART police officer was hit in the leg.
Officers continued to chase the bus, which drove through multiple cities including Dallas, Richardson, Garland and Rockwall County. Police believe the suspect was telling the driver where to go.
During the chase, the suspect shot multiple times at the officers, hitting multiple police vehicles. One of the bullets went through the front windshield of a Garland Police car and hit a Garland Officer in the neck.
Officers set up spikes on the road, which the bus ran on the President George Bush Turnpike just before noon, police said in the press release. The suspect got out of the bus and started shooting.
In the shootout, police shot the suspect, who died at a local hospital, police said.
The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Ramon Thomas Villagomez, who was wanted for a murder in San Antonio and an aggravated assault in Brazoria County.
The DART Officer and Garland Officer that were shot were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover. A passenger was on the bus and was not harmed. The driver was also not hurt.
