A 22-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting a man in the face at a south Fort Worth gas station early Wednesday and firing at police officers, officials said.

Officers were dispatched to the Shell gas station in the 12400 block of South Freeway about 12:25 a.m. after someone reported that a 19-year-old had been shot, according to the 911 call sheet. Police said the victim was changing a tire at the time, and it appeared to be a drive-by shooting.

A family member took the injured man and his girlfriend, who was in the car during the shooting, to a local hospital. Officers stayed at the gas station to review surveillance video and secure the crime scene, while others went to the hospital to investigate further, according to police.

“At approximately 1:55am, while officers were at the gas station, shots were fired in the area of those police officers by an unknown suspect,” police said in a news release. “A short time later, while officers were at the hospital, shots were fired in the area of those officers by an unknown suspect.”

Gun Violence detectives interviewed the victim’s girlfriend, and she gave them information about a possible suspect and a description of his car, according to police.

Around 3 a.m., officers at the hospital saw a car that looked like the suspect’s vehicle drive by. Someone inside fired shots toward the officers, the release states.

Police followed the car but lost sight of it in a nearby neighborhood. Minutes later someone called 911 to say a man had parked in their driveway and appeared to be hiding next to their house, according to police.

Officers located the suspect, and he was arrested without further incident. Jail records identify him as 22-year-old Jeremiah Smith. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault against a public servant.

Authorities haven’t released information about the victim’s condition. No other civilians or officers were injured, according to police. The incident is under investigation.
