A Grand Prairie police officer on Saturday shot a vehicle theft suspect who fired a round from a rifle that struck the officer’s vehicle, according to the police department.

The suspect, Mark Williams, 30, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, police said. No officers were injured.

A woman reported about 8 p.m. that Williams, her former boyfriend, arrived at her residence in the 3900 block of Dechman Drive in Grand Prairie and stole her vehicle, the Police Department said.

Officers found Williams, who left in the vehicle, leading to a short pursuit. The vehicle Williams was driving became disabled during the chase, and he fired a rifle at an officer, according to the department. The officer returned fire and shot Williams, who surrendered.

Williams, who lives in Grimes, Texas, was wanted on felony charges and was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer.

Under departmental policy, the Dallas County Criminal District Attorney’s Office officer‐involved shooting team is conducting an investigation.
