Shooter who killed two at North Texas Chick-fil-A sentenced to life in prison
The man who fatally shot two employees at a North Texas Chick-fil-A in June 2024 was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.
Oved Bernardo Mendoza Argueta pleaded guilty to murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon right before a district judge handed down his sentence, Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot said in a news release. The 38-year-old defendant was also given 20 years for each aggravated assault charge.
The shooting occurred inside the Chick-fil-A in the 5300 block of North MacArthur Boulevard, in the Las Colinas area of Irving. Patricia Chileno Portillo, 49, and Brayan Godoy Jovel, 31, were killed. A third employee was injured but survived.
Mendoza Argueta’s wife also worked at the restaurant. She wasn’t hurt in the attack and was able to identify her husband as the shooter, according to the defendant’s arrest warrant affidavit.
“No sentence can restore what was taken from these families,” the DA’s news release states. “But the resolution of this case ensures accountability and affirms that acts of violence like this will be met with serious consequences.”
