Man arrested when police chase ends in crash on Loop 820 in North Richland Hills
A 33-year-old Hurst man is in custody after he crashed his car following a pursuit by North Richland Hills police officers late Thursday morning, officials said.
The driver of a white car failed to stop after officers saw him swerving across all lanes of traffic in North Richland Hills, police said in a news release. The officers chased the vehicle through Hurst and Bedford, but stopped when the car entered the Loop 820 toll road because of safety concerns.
The car crashed on westbound 820 near Holiday Lane about 11 a.m., just a few minutes after getting on the toll road. Officers deployed a drone and began attempts to take the man into custody, according to the release.
Drone video footage showed the driver leaning back in his seat. His hand was inside a backpack, where police later found a gun, the release states.
The suspect initially refused to comply with the officers’ instructions, police said. He finally climbed out a car window after brief negotiations, but continued to ignore commands, officials said in the release.
A department spokesperson said officers fired beanbag rounds at the driver and safely took him into custody. He was booked into the North Richland Hills Joint Detention Facility, and charges against him are currently pending. The arrested suspect’s name will be released once he’s appeared before a judge.
