Carrollton police shot and killed a man they say aimed a handgun at officers as they attempted to serve a trespass warning at his residence, according to a statement.

Officers had initially been dispatched to an LA Fitness location on North Josey Lane in response to a report of a man taking unwanted photographs of a female patron at the gym, officials said.

The man, identified as 71-year-old William Michael Burns, was asked to leave the gym after an interaction with gym staff, according to the statement. Gym staff then requested police issue a trespass warning to Burns.

When officers arrived at Burns’ residence and knocked on the door, he did not immediately answer, and could be seen moving inside the residence, police said.

Moments later, Burns exited the residence with a handgun and aimed it at officers, who were demanding that he drop the weapon. Officers then shot Burns, police said.

Officers rendered first aid, but Burns was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the statement.

All involved officers have been placed on administrative leave; none was injured in the incident.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office’s Public Integrity Unit is conducting a joint investigation with the Carrollton Police Department.
