A man accused of stealing grocery items Monday morning from a Kroger store in Crowley was combative as police tried to arrest him and once in custody he bit an officer’s finger, according to a news release.

Officers had responded to a report of a suspicious person inside the Kroger at 1004 S. Crowley Road when they spotted the 32-year-old suspect running from the store to his car, according to the news release posted on the Crowley Police Department Facebook page.

The suspect resisted arrest and officers used a Taser twice before he was taken into custody, police said. The man started to “self-harm” and was moved from the pavement to a grassy area, where he continued to resist arrest, according to the release.

As officers tried to place him in a police car, he bit an officer's finger, the release said.

“The suspect continued to actively resist arrest and attempt to bite other officers until he was secured in the patrol vehicle,” police said. “He was transported to the Crowley Justice Center. While in custody, he was treated and transported by Crowley EMS to a Fort Worth hospital.”

The injured officer also was taken to a hospital.

The suspect, a 32-year-old Crowley resident, faces charges of theft, evading arrest, resisting arrest and aggravated assault of a public servant.
