8-year-old on bicycle injured in hit-and-run by SUV in Fort Worth, police say
An 8-year-old boy was injured in a hit-and-run while riding his bicycle outside a Fort Worth apartment complex on Friday, Sept. 5, police said.
Officers responded to the hit-and-run crash about 7:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Vela Lane at the Mercantile Square Apartments.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the boy who was hit by a black SUV that fled the scene, police said.
The boy was taken to the hospital due to his injuries, police said.
Witnesses reported that the driver of a black SUV “not only hit him but actually drove over him head-on. The driver even got out, looked at him lying there, and then sped away — leaving him in the street screaming, skinned, and bloody, not knowing if he would be okay,” the boy’s mother, Baylea Christiansen, wrote in a GoFundMe post.
“Thankfully, my son survived with no critical or life-threatening injuries,” Christiansen wrote.
Mom wants driver held accountable for child’s trauma
The family believes the boy’s bike being wedged between him and the vehicle is “what ultimately saved his life. He has been left injured, shaken, and deeply traumatized by this horrific event,” Christiansen wrote.
“Right now, he is suffering an enormous amount of pain both mentally and physically. At his age, he’s starting to care about his appearance — and he is devastated by his injuries,” the mother wrote.
The 8-year-old is unable to sleep without crying throughout the night and uncontrollably in his sleep, his mother wrote. “He says it’s all he can think about or see and appetite has significantly decreased due to his pain.”
“We are so overwhelmed by the love and support our community has shown — we truly don’t know how we could ever repay everyone for stepping up to help our family during this horrific time,” Christiansen wrote. “As his mother, I will do everything in my power to make sure the person responsible is held accountable.”
Traffic investigation officers are investigating the hit-and-run and searching for the driver. No arrests have been made.
