As he assaulted her early Sunday in Grand Prairie, a woman shot to death a man with whom she had previously been in a relationship, police said.

The man forced his way into the woman’s house in the portion of Grand Prairie that is in Dallas County, the city’s police department said. As he assaulted her about 5:45 a.m., the woman retrieved a handgun and shot the man, police said.

The woman was taken from the house in the 1800 block of Avenue E to a hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries, police said.

The shooting appears to be justified by self-defense, police suggested. The case will be referred to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the man’s name or age.
