Man shot on TRE train at Fort Worth downtown station; suspect in custody
A man in a wheelchair inside a Trinity Railway Express train car on Thursday in Fort Worth shot with a handgun a standing man who had assaulted him, authorities said.
The men fought at midday on the train near the Fort Worth Central Station downtown at 1001 Jones St.
The shooting victim suffered a wound to the leg and was taken in a stable condition to John Peter Smith Hospital, according to a Fort Worth police spokesperson. The injury is potentially life-threatening.
“At approximately 11:10 a.m. today, there was an active shooter situation reported on TRE Train 2927,” a TRE spokesperson said in an email. “Law enforcement was immediately notified, and authorities responded swiftly to secure the scene.”
“The suspect was apprehended without incident at Fort Worth Central Station,” the TRE statement said.
A TRE employee called Fort Worth police and said there was a man with a gun causing a disturbance on the train, which was due to arrive at the station within a few minutes of the call, the police spokesperson said.
The shooter, who police said fired several rounds inside the train, was taken into custody and also taken to JPS at his request. The shooter’s name has not been released.
Video recorded by a witness appeared to show medics treating the patient at the scene.
The shooting delayed passengers. Trains during the on-scene investigation ran only between Trinity Lakes and EBJ Union stations.
Police had cleared the shooting scene by about 1:15 p.m.
