An “unclothed” man who Mesquite police say stole an ambulance from a North Texas hospital on Monday led officers on a chase into a neighboring county.

Someone from Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite called police to report the stolen ambulance. The caller said that a man who’d been taken to the hospital got into one of the ambulances and drove away, according to police. The man wasn’t wearing any clothes.

Officers found the Allegiance Ambulance, but the naked suspect refused to stop, police said. He led law enforcement on a chase into neighboring Kaufman County. The Terrell Police Department and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit and were able to stop the ambulance using spike strips.

The driver ran from officers, but was caught after a brief chase on foot. Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Walter Butler of Dallas. He faces charges of theft, evading arrest with a vehicle and resisting arrest.

No accidents or injuries resulted from the pursuit, according to police.
