Police investigate after stranger shoots at family during Fort Worth traffic jam
Police are investigating after a family reported getting shot at during a traffic jam in east Fort Worth on Monday, May 12, officials said.
The family, who talked to KXAS-TV on the condition of anonymity out of concern for their safety, said they were on their way home from buying groceries when the shooting occurred. Traffic on Interstate 20 was backed up due to a fatal accident, so they decided to take Rosedale Street.
Traffic was also congested in the 7000 block of East Rosedale, and cars were merging into a single lane to avoid a disabled vehicle, according to Fort Worth police. The wife told KXAS that they had just passed the disabled car when someone in a red sedan opened fire.
“I thought it was something wrong with the car,” she said. “And no, it was somebody shooting at us.”
The wife told the NBC station that the entire incident lasted about 15 seconds. She pulled over. The red sedan pulled over on the opposite side of the street, made a U-turn across the median and left.
The family drove to Arlington and called police shortly after 5 p.m. Officers learned that the victims’ truck had been fired at three times and had bullet holes on the driver’s side, Fort Worth police told the Star-Telegram in an email.
The husband told KXAS that the attack was unprovoked.
One bullet hit the truck above the back tire and another one lodged in the gas tank, KXAS reported. The third bullet struck the door on the driver’s side and traveled through the base of the seat where the wife was sitting. The third bullet also hit a bag of tortilla chips on the backseat floor near the feet of the couple’s 16-year-old daughter.
No injuries were reported, according to police.
“To me, that’s God,” the woman told NBC. “He’s always looking out for me.”
No arrests have been made as the investigation continues, police said on Friday.
