Credit card skimming bust prevents $5.2M in losses to Dallas-Fort Worth victims, cops say
A multi-agency operation led to the arrest of two Romanian citizens accused in a card-skimming scheme and the prevention of $5.2 million in potential losses to victims in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation said.
The two Romanians were allegedly building credit card skimmers, devices that attach to ATMs and capture the users’ card information, officials said.
During a search, authorities seized hundreds of altered credit cards that contained information stolen from victims, $16,000 in cash, and equipment used to build skimming devices, according to a news release.
Petruta Camelia Ciuperca and Alexandru Constantin, both age 34, were arrested and booked into the Dallas County Jail.
Authorities are seeking a third suspect, but will not release the name of that person at this time, according to the statement.
Several North Texas police departments, including those in Irving, Garland, Euless and Grand Prairie took part in the investigation with the Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center.
