Two people were seriously injured when a Texas Health Resources police officer exchanged gunfire with the occupants of a car in southwest Fort Worth on Friday morning, according to Fort Worth police.

The officer was shot at, but was not hit by the gunfire, police said.

The officer was in full uniform and was driving a pickup truck when shots were fired by both the officer and one of the occupants of a sedan, police said in a news release. Investigators have not said what led to the shooting.

According to Fort Worth Jail records, 22-year-old Allen Williams, one of the occupants of the sedan, faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the incident.

Williams and another person in the sedan were wounded by the gunfire and taken to a hospital by ambulance, according to police and MedStar.

Both vehicles ended up in a church parking lot near Selkirk Drive and Walden Avenue, where more than 20 police units were dispatched around 11:40 a.m., according to the 911 call sheet.

The Fort Worth Police Department’s Major Case Unit is investigating the shooting, officials said.

A staff attorney with the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas is assisting the officer who was involved in the shooting, CLEAT said in a social media post.

Texas Health Resources is a nonprofit healthcare system in North Texas that operates hospitals including Texas Health Harris Methodist and Texas Health Huguley in Fort Worth.

The officer’s name has not been released. It’s unclear whether the officer was on duty at the time of the shooting. According to the healthcare system’s website, its officers patrol Texas Health campuses, and the nearest hospital is several miles away from where the shooting occurred.
