A former North Texas childcare worker has been sentenced to four years in prison after she pleaded guilty last month to exposing children to THC-infused candy, authorities said.

Anisah Burks, 35, was arrested in October 2022 after police responded to a medical emergency at Primrose School of Prosper, the day care where she worked, town of Prosper officials said.

Four children ages 12 to 18 months old were taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined each toddler was suffering from “severe exposure” to THC, which is the active chemical in marijuana, according to a town news release.

Further investigation revealed the children had been exposed to the chemical through infused gummy candies that belonged to Burks, authorities said.

Burks was arrested and charged with delivery of a controlled substance and four counts of injury to a child, according to the statement.

She was sentenced to one year for each count of injury to a child, and three years for possession of a controlled substance, authorities said. The sentences will be served concurrently.

At the time of the incident on Halloween in 2022, Primrose School of Prosper said in a statement to WFAA-TV, “Words cannot sufficiently express our deep concern over this matter. We have every reason to believe, including from the authorities, that this was an isolated incident involving one teacher who was immediately terminated.”
