The Humane Society of North Texas will take in animals from shelters affected by the wildfires in California, and the pets will be available for adoption locally, officials said Monday.

As part of a partnership with the organization Wings of Rescue, two planes carrying over 150 adoptable pets will land at Meacham Airport in Fort Worth on Sunday, Jan. 19, the Humane Society said in a news release.

The effort is aimed at creating space for evacuees’ pets to stay in California’s shelters until their owners return from evacuation and at the same time giving the existing shelter pets a chance at adoption, according to the statement.

Foster families are needed to aid in homing the pets until adoption, officials said. To volunteer as a foster, email the Humane Society at foster@hsnt.org.

The Humane Society is also seeking donations of funds and supplies to provide care for the animals. Supplies such as blankets, pet beds and dog food can be dropped off at any Humane Society location, officials said.

If you’re interested in adopting a pet, the society will host adoption events at its Fort Worth Saxe-Forte Adoption Center, at 1840 E. Lancaster Ave., from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 17-19.
