Arlington man arrested after trying to rob a bank using Google Translate, police say
An Arlington man was arrested on Wednesday after he tried to rob a bank using Google Translate, police said.
Arlington police said 28-year-old Lazaro Silva walked into a Chase Bank branch in south Arlington at about 4 p.m. and showed his phone to the teller. The message on his phone read, “This is a robbery,” which was translated from Spanish.
Silva made a gesture like a gun with his other hand, police said. Another teller who saw what was happening called the police.
Officers found Silva outside near the bank and arrested him. Silva didn’t take any money and told officers he was joking and was just trying to make conversation with the teller.
He was taken to the Arlington Jail and charged with one count of robbery by threat.
Silva was being held Friday in the Tarrant County Jail with bond set at $10,000.
