Drive-by shooter killed Fort Worth 14-year-old sitting in his home, relatives say
A 14-year-old World Languages Institute student has been identified as the victim in a deadly drive-by shooting in south Forth Worth, relatives and authorities said Tuesday.
His brother also was injured in the shooting, which occurred Thursday morning at the family’s home.
There were no witnesses who saw the vehicle that drove by the home or the shooter who opened fire, killing Jacari Simmons.
“He and his brother were in the house when they shot it up,” said Simmons’ grandmother Tina Gowans, of Fort Worth, in a telephone interview with the Star-Telegram.
Simmons was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital after the shooting and died Friday afternoon.
The shooting occurred about 5 a.m. Thursday.
Simmons and his brother were in the living room when someone drove by and fired into the home, Fort Worth police said.
Fort Worth police did not release any other details and have not identified any suspects or a motive for the shooting.
Simmons had been a student at World Languages Institute, according to Fort Worth Independent School District records.
The school is a secondary school for students from the Spanish immersion and dual language enrichment programs in the Fort Worth school district, according to the school’s website.
On Tuesday, Simmons’ family was planning his funeral, his mother, Bianca Russell of Fort Worth, said Tuesday in a brief interview with the Star-Telegram
He grew up playing pee-wee football and basketball, his mother said.
“He was a calm, collected boy,” Russell said. “He was such a sweet kid.”
Fort Worth police on Tuesday continued their search for the suspects responsible for killing Simmons.
