The speed limit was 40 mph. Dallas motorist accused of driving 80 mph in traffic death

A Dallas man was taken into custody Friday and accused in a July traffic death in which police say he was driving over 80 mph at the time of crash.

The speed limit at the scene of the crash is 40 mph, Carrollton police said.

Carrollton police identified the suspect as Luis Alexis Fonseca Acosta, who was arrested Friday morning at the Carrollton police station.

The 39-year-old Dallas resident faces charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Acosta was in the Carrollton Jail on Friday, but authorities said he would be taken to the Denton County Jail.

Killed in the crash was 67-year-old Shamsuddin Jooma.

Jooma’s 17-year-old son was seriously injured in the wreck and he continues to recover from his injuries, Carrollton police said.

The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on July 24 at W. Rosemeade Parkway and Greenway Park Drive in Carrollton.

Acosta’s vehicle hit Jooma’s sport utility vehicle as the victim entered Rosemeade Parkway from an adjacent neighborhood, Carrollton police said.

Before the collision, Acosta had reached a speed of 86 mph, Carrollton police said.

Acosta also faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon for a gun that was found in the vehicle after the crash, Carrollton police said.
