Teen faces manslaughter charge in May traffic death of 19-year-old in north Fort Worth

A Haslet teen accused of driving recklessly and causing the death of a motorist in May faces a charge of manslaughter in the case, according to jail records.

Colton Meyer, 18, is expected to be charged in the traffic death of 19-year-old Evan James Kriese of Roanoke on May 26.

Meyer was booked into the Fort Worth Jail just after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to jail records. No other information was available on Meyer.

Kriese was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to officials with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. He died from blunt-force injuries to his head.

He was a 2019 graduate of Northwest High School.

Within hours of his death, Northwest school district officials released a statement on Kriese’s death.

“Northwest ISD is deeply saddened to learn about the passing of a former student,” according to a statement released in May by Northwest school district officials. “Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

The wreck was reported shortly after 9 p.m. on May 26 at Texas 114 and Farm to Market Road 156 in the Justin area. The accident scene is near Northwest High School and the Texas Motor Speedway, where several high schools in the Northwest Independent School District held their graduation ceremonies on May 26. Northwest High’s graduation began at 7 p.m. on May 26.

Fort Worth police said a red truck drove around another vehicle as the lanes expanded from two to three lanes.

At some point, the red truck hit a gray vehicle, killing the driver, who was later identified as Kriese.

Meyer, who was the driver of the red truck, and a passenger were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.
