Intense search underway for gunman who opened fire during burglary in Fort Worth suburb

An intense search was underway Monday for a man accused of opening fire at residents after they interrupted him breaking into vehicles in North Richland Hills.

The suspect then led area police on a chase through North Richland Hills, Hurst, Colleyville and Bedford before returning to North Richland Hills and crashing when police set up spike strips.

But the suspect fled the crash scene and escaped, police said.

North Richland Hills police released a photograph of the suspect Monday afternoon in the hope that someone would recognize him and contact police. The photo was taken from a home security camera on Harwood Road in North Richland Hills.

No police officers or residents were reported injured in the incident.

North Richland police responded to a shots-fired call about 2:45 a.m. in the 8500 block of Harwood Road.

A resident reported the suspect was seen breaking into multiple vehicles in the area and opened fire when he was interrupted.

The suspect jumped into a vehicle and drove off. That vehicle was later reported stolen out of Keller.

North Richland Hills police quickly located the suspect’s vehicle in the area and began a pursuit throughout northeast Tarrant County.

At about 3 a.m., police set up the spike strips and the suspect’s vehicle eventually crashed in the area of Grove Street and Boulevard 26.

The driver ran from his vehicle and he was last seen in the Laura/Colorado street area. Initially, he was seen wearing a red hooded jacket, black pants and red Fila high-top tennis shoes. He was later seen wearing a red and blue striped shirt, red shorts and one red Fila high-top tennis shoe, police said.

The suspect is possibly armed with a handgun, North Richland Hills police said.

Anyone with information should call police.
