Major traffic accident in Fort Worth turns out to be highway homicide, police say
A Fort Worth man was shot to death by a passing motorist as he drove down a highway last week, Fort Worth police said Tuesday.
Initially, Fort Worth police responded to a major accident on the afternoon of June 17 near the Moritz Chevrolet dealership in west Fort Worth.
Detectives later learned a driver had suffered a gunshot wound to his head. He was identified as Joshua Carl Sweatman, 41, of Fort Worth, according to officials with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sweatman died on June 18 from the gunshot wound and his death has been ruled a homicide.
Fort Worth police did not comment on Tuesday on a motive for the shooting.
But police asked for help from anyone who may have information on the case.
Authorities released photographs on Tuesday from surveillance cameras of Sweatman’s car and other vehicles whose drivers could be potential witnesses to the shooting. The surveillance cameras were from businesses in the area of the shooting.
Fort Worth police responded to the major accident call shortly after 4 p.m. on June 17.
The accident involved a blue 1999 Crown Victoria and a white Dodge dual-wheeled truck pulling a car carrier-type trailer.
Detectives believe Sweatman, who was driving the blue car, was shot by a passing motorist near the intersection of Loop 820 and Camp Bowie Boulevard West.
