Burleson man arrested in hit-and-run crash that killed high school student

A Burleson man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal hit-and-run crash in the city on Monday night that killed a 16-year-old student-athlete at Burleson High School and injured a recent graduate.

Tre Allison was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred around 9:25 p.m. on Northwest John Jones Drive near Tarpon Street, Burleson police said in a news release. He was the passenger in a car which was driven by his 18-year-old friend, who was transported to a hospital and later released.

The driver of the other car, Eric Padilla, continued driving past the scene, police said. Officers reportedly stopped Padilla a short time after the crash and conducted field sobriety tests, though they found no evidence he was intoxicated.

Padilla was arrested on the charge of accident involving death, police said Wednesday. His bond was set at $250,000.

The loss of Allison — a member of the varsity football, basketball and track teams as well as an AP student — has shocked and saddened the Burleson community. The first day of summer football practices was on Monday, a day of excitement with new coach Jon Kitna, a former NFL quarterback.

Practices have been canceled this week, though coaches who spoke with the Star-Telegram said they have left the field open if any of the teammates wanted to come together there. A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday at the Burleson ISD Stadium.

A GoFundMe page that says it’s raising funds for the family had raised more than $9,400 as of Wednesday night.

Police said on Wednesday the accident occurred as Padilla tried to turn left onto Tarpon Street from John Jones Drive, striking a southbound Acura with the teenagers inside. He then didn’t stop to help, police said.

He was in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday awaiting arraignment.
