Monday was supposed to be a special day for Burleson High School.

The football team was among the thousands of programs across the state that started summer strength and conditioning workouts, and they featured a new coach — former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna.

It started off exciting as Kitna and his staff met the players early in the morning, but the day ended with devastating news.

Rising junior Tre Allison, 16, who also played basketball, died in a car accident late Monday night in the 700 block of NW John Jones Drive, Burleson police said. The crash occurred less than a mile away from the high school campus.

According to NBC 5, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Allison was the passenger, while the driver, another high school student, was transported to a local hospital with an unknown condition.

The car Allison and the other student were in was clipped by another vehicle on Tarpon Drive and veered into a tree, police told NBC 5. The car split in two.

Burleson police are continuing to investigate.

“Waking up to a coach’s worst fear. We lost a very good young man last night,” Burleson ISD athletic director Kevin Ozee said in a tweet Tuesday morning.

The Elks were scheduled to practice Monday through Friday of this week, but the school decided to cancel all morning practices Tuesday.

Coaches and counselors are available at the school’s gymnasium until noon.

“My heart is so heavy and I’m at a lost. Cherish life! Be great in all that you do! That’s exactly how Tre operated on a daily! Love you Tre, you will be missed heavily,” Burleson assistant coach Phillip Tanner said in a tweet.

Tanner, a former Dallas Cowboys running back, was hired in March, three weeks after the school district named Kitna head football coach. Kitna played for the Cowboys and was their QB coach last season.
