Former Dallas Cowboys running back joins Jon Kitna’s football staff at Burleson High

Phillip Tanner, who starred at Dallas Kimball, is joining Jon Kitna’s staff at Burleson High School.

Kitna was hired as the next head football coach for the Elks earlier in March. Kitna is a former NFL quarterback, who played his final two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Kitna was the Cowboys quarterback coach last season and helped Dak Prescott to a career year. Tanner was also with the Cowboys as a special teams coach.

“Just want to thank ⁦Wayne Leek, Kevin Ozee and the entire BHS family for allowing me this opportunity to take the field with my guy again. Looking forward to developing R.E.A.L Men and cultivating a community,” Tanner said on Twitter.

Tanner capped off his Kimball career as District MVP after rushing for 1,700 yards and 29 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,400 yards and 22 TDs as a junior.

A 3-star all-purpose back, Tanner graduated in 2006 before playing at Middle Tennessee. He was ranked as the No. 20 all-purpose back in the nation according to 247Sports.

As a senior with MT in 2010, Tanner rushed for 928 yards and 13 TDs in 13 starts. He was second team All-Sun Belt Conference.

The Cowboys signed Tanner as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He played in Dallas for three seasons and was on the practice squad in 2014. He also had stints with Indianapolis, Buffalo and San Francisco, primarily on special teams.
