Arlington man fires round through garage and into a neighbor’s house, police say
From his Arlington bedroom on Friday, a 41-year old man fired a rifle round that whisked through a garage and into a house across the street, police alleged.
The shot interrupted a conversation between police officers and the man’s mother at the house on San Martin Drive near Susan Drive, said Lt. Chris Cook, an Arlington police spokesman. The neighboring residence into which the round was fired was occupied by at least one person, Cook said. No one was injured.
The man’s mother called authorities about 3:15 p.m. to report that her son had a gun and was acting strange, Cook said.
The man had an encounter with police in May after which he was treated at a mental-health facility. A gun was seized from him in connection with that episode, Cook said.
Also inside the house on Friday were the man’s children, a 12-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl.
After the first round was fired, everyone left the house except for the man, whose name police did not release on Friday night.
Over the next four hours, he did not respond to SWAT team officers’ attempts to talk with him via telephone or loudspeaker, Cook said. At times, he walked around the house. He fired other rounds, Cook said.
Between 30 and 40 people who live in other houses in the neighborhood left and went to nearby Carl Knox Jr. Park.
About 8 p.m., police used gas in an effort to force the man from his house. He emerged and was arrested.
