Suspect who died after shooting Forest Hill officer identified as San Antonio man

A suspect who was killed after authorities say he shot a Forest Hill police officer and led police on a chase was identified on Thursday as Jose Chapa III of San Antonio, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office website.

Chapa, 32, died early Wednesday after he crashed a stolen Forest Hill patrol car in Fort Worth and police fired shots into the vehicle, authorities said.

A ruling on the cause of Chapa’s death is pending.

Forest Hill Officer Naquirra Williams, 24, was released from the hospital Thursday after she suffered a gunshot wound to her forearm in the incident.

“She is home, and she is expected to make a full recovery,” said Forest Hill Police Chief Dan Dennis in a Thursday email.

Fort Worth Police Chief Ed Kraus said Thursday he visited Williams at the hospital.

“She was doing great. She was smiling,” Kraus said. “And from what I was told she performed admirably.”

Several residents witnessed the beginning of the incident at a 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station in Forest Hill early Wednesday morning.

Telvin Fields told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV he was pumping gas when a dark SUV pulled up.

“And a dude hopped out with a gun, and he immediately walked toward me and he was like, ‘Let me get your car’,” Fields told WFAA-TV. “He cussed and he said, ‘I’m not playing, I don’t want to have to kill you’.”

Fields ran inside the 7-Eleven and locked the door with two employees inside.

“He just started letting off shots, boom — one shot. The next thing you know, boom, boom, boom, boom,” 7-Eleven employee Thoal Lul told WFAA-TV.

Chapa then shot Officer Williams about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 6600 block of Forest Hill Drive, police said.

After she was shot, Williams, who has been a Forest Hill officer for about a year, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth by another officer.

The suspect stole Williams’ patrol car and led police on chase that ended when he crashed on northbound U.S. 287, south of downtown Fort Worth.

Police fired upon the suspect, but authorities did not say whether he was shot or release the cause of his death.
