Forest Hill police officer shot, suspect dead after chase ends in Fort Worth

A man shot a police officer in a Forest Hill convenience store parking lot early Wednesday before he stole her patrol car, crashed it on a highway in Fort Worth and died, authorities said.

The suspect shot Forest Hill Officer Naquirra Williams, 24, in her forearm about 2:30 a.m. in the 6600 block of Forest Hill Drive, police said.

Williams underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery, Forest Hill Police Chief Dan Dennis said Wednesday night.

After she was shot, Williams, who has been a Forest Hill officer for about a year, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth by another officer.

Police fired upon the suspect, but authorities did not say whether he was shot or release the cause of his death.

The suspect, whose name authorities had not released, stole Williams’ patrol car and led police in a chase for about 10 miles into Fort Worth.

The chase ended on northbound U.S. 287, south of downtown Fort Worth. The suspect crashed and additional shots were fired, according to the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas and Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.

The freeway at U.S. 287 northbound at Riverside Drive was closed for most of the morning Wednesday.

At least seven police vehicles along with a tow truck were still at the scene just before 9 a.m. Wednesday at northbound U.S. 287 in Fort Worth.

At the request of Forest Hill police, Texas Rangers are investigating the case with the assistance of Fort Worth police.

Rangers were at the crime scene Wednesday morning at a 7-Eleven convenience store and Shell gas station in Forest Hill near where the officer was shot.

Fort Worth police also were on scene securing the perimeter with crime-scene tape. Orange cones were placed in the parking lot which are often to mark the location of shell casings. The front doors of the store were broken and shattered.

There were two gaping holes in the store doors, but it is unknown what might have caused the breakage.

A block away, an older model Ford SUV with the driver’s side door open was another crime scene. The SUV was surrounded on one side by evidence markers, crime-scene tape and Fort Worth and Forest Hill police vehicles. The vehicle was stopped diagonally in the middle of Forest Hill Drive. There were more than a dozen shell casings around the SUV.

A discount tobacco store and gas station were also surrounded by crime-scene tape.
