Veterans Affairs Hospital police in Dallas fatally shoot man armed with knife
Officers at a Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dallas fatally shot a man late Wednesday night who was armed with a knife and refused to put it down, according to Dallas police.
Dallas police officers weren’t involved in the shooting but the department is investigating the incident. Police didn’t describe what happened in the moments before the shooting, or if the man was threatening the officers.
It was unclear how many officers fired their weapons.
The man, whose identity wasn’t released, was transported to a hospital following the shooting, where he died from his injuries, police said. The Veterans Affairs officers involved in the shooting weren’t injured.
Dallas officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Veterans Affairs Hospital on South Lancaster Road around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, police said. They were advised hospital police had come into contact with a man who had come to the hospital for psychiatric issues and had a knife.
The hospital officers told Dallas officers that at some point during their interaction with him, he started to walk away and they began following him and trying to disarm him, police said. Their attempts were unsuccessful, the officers reported, and they discharged their weapons, striking him.
The Dallas police special investigations unit is investigating the shooting.
