Dallas police officer dies after off-duty street racing crash, authorities say
A Dallas police officer whose department said he was street racing Sunday while off duty and crashed into a tree has died.
Officer Joseph George, who had been employed by the Dallas Police Department for four years, died Tuesday. He had been in critical condition at a hospital since the crash.
The department has been trying to identify the driver of the other car, who drove from the scene, police said.
George was racing his black Ford Mustang with a white two-door Suzuki about 1:40 p.m. in the 7200 block of East Mockingbird Lane in Dallas, police said. Detectives obtained video images of the car and said they believed it is a two-door Suzuki Coupe.
George lost control of the Mustang during the race and slammed into a tree, police said.
The Suzuki’s operator was last seen driving east on Mockingbird Lane.
George was assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. His funeral service has not been scheduled, police said.
“Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” police wrote Thursday in a statement announcing George’s death.
