Southlake mayor concerned about safety, but wants students to hold protest
Students who organized a protest in response to the death of George Floyd met with city officials Friday and are moving forward with their event.
Estela Romero, a student who helped organize the protest, said the meeting with Southlake Mayor Laura Hill went well.
“We’re ready to go,” she said.
Hill said in a text message to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that she and Acting Police Chief Ashleigh Casey met with the students.
“It was an excellent meeting and I am glad they accepted my invitation. The meeting was not to discuss anything other then working closely together to insure that their event is everything they want it to be,” Hill said.
Earlier this week, Hill posted on her Facebook page that the city couldn’t guarantee the students’ safety at the event, and encouraged them to move the protest to a park. But Romero said she and other protest organizers wanted the protest in the Town Square so that many could hear what they have to say.
Romero, a student at Carroll High School, organized the Progressive Activists Club, and said she hopes the protest will highlight the issues facing people of color.
The protest is 2-4 p.m. at the popular Town Square.
