Man dies after being shot at by four Haltom City officers in incident near Fort Worth

A 48-year-old Haltom City man who was shot multiple times by police in a confrontation about a week ago died Saturday, according to officials with the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Four Haltom City officers opened fire on the man, whom authorities say drove his car at them on May 24 after police responded to a shots-fired call, Haltom City police said.

James Franklin Milligan Jr. of Haltom City died at 3:13 p.m. Saturday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the medical examiner’s website on Monday.

A ruling on his death is pending an autopsy.

No Haltom City officers were injured in the incident.

As per policy of the department, the officers — who were not identified — were placed on administrative leave.

The Texas Rangers and members of the Tarrant County District Attorney’s law enforcement critical response team are assisting in the investigation.

Haltom City police responded to a shots-fired call about 7:05 p.m. May 24 in the 2300 block of McGuire Street.

As officers arrived in the neighborhood, a black car came around Nina Lane and McGuire Street in Haltom City, police said.

Milligan lived on Nina Lane, according to records with the medical examiner’s office.

The driver stopped in the middle of the street, got out of his vehicle, yelled at officers and went to the trunk of his car, where he retrieved an item, police said. Haltom City police have not said what that item was.

The driver got back in the car and drove at the Haltom City officers, who fired at the vehicle, police said.

After he was shot, the motorist’s car veered off the street and hit a telephone pole.

The driver was later identified as James Franklin Milligan Jr., according to authorities.
