Mayor Patrick Shelbourne has submitted his resignation, six months after he was elected to the post.

Shelbourne, a retired accountant, was elected in May to fill the unexpired term of Hector Garcia, who died in February. In his resignation letter, Shelbourne cited health and personal reasons. He could not be reached for comment.

According to Shelbourne’s bio on Watauga’s website, he was elected to the city council in 2010. Before he was elected to the City Council, Shelbourne served on the Planning and Zoning and charter review commissions. He also graduated from the Citizens Police Academy.

After Shelbourne was elected as mayor he wrote, “I am impressed with the friendliness of the citizens of Watauga, and the competent, capable way the city is run. Big challenges face the city in the coming years, but the city has the financial soundness and infrastructure to face these challenges going forward.

“I hope to serve the city as mayor by assisting the council in making sound, rational decisions on matters brought before them, to provide effective leadership, and to always keep the health, safety and general welfare of the citizens foremost in my actions.”
