A man and his dog drowned in a community pond in the Country Lakes neighborhood near the Denton/Argyle border Wednesday, July 15, the Denton Fire Department said.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as 51-year-old James Stewart of Argyle.

“A man and his dog were walking in the park and the dog went into the water and began struggling,” Denton Fire Department spokesperson David Boots said.

Denton police were called around 6:38 p.m. Wednesday and immediately started searching the water for the man and his dog before the fire department arrived. The Denton Fire Department announced the deaths on social media at 9:10 p.m.

The Lewisville fire and dive teams and the Flower Mound fire department assisted with the recovery
