A two-car crash killed five people and injured two Sunday afternoon on U.S. 380, about eight miles west of Jacksboro, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

According to investigators, the collision occurred about 1 p.m. when a Honda Accord going westbound tried to pass in a no-passing zone and hit an eastbound Honda CR-V head on.

Three people in the Accord were pronounced dead at the scene in Jack County. Their identities are unknown, according to the DPS report.

There were four occupants in the CR-V. Two of them, an unnamed 1-year-old boy and 29-year-old Jonathan Andres Contreras, also died at the scene.

The other occupants of the CR-V sustained serious injuries. A 4-year-old boy was taken to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, and Evelyn Alexis Sheppard, a 30-year-old woman from Bryson, was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital.

A DPS spokesperson said that after the cars collided, the Accord rolled before it stopped on the south side of the highway, and the CR-V spun and came to a stop on the south side of the road as well.

The Texas Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
