A River Oaks police officer was involved in a shooting on Monday afternoon when a man pulled out a gun during a traffic stop, police said.

The driver who pulled the handgun suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound during the traffic stop about 12:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of River Oaks Boulevard, police said.

The 43-year-old man was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he died, police said.

Police said the officer also fired his gun but did not shoot the man.

River Oaks police have not released the driver’s name. The man will be identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office after his next of kin has been notified.

The officer was not injured in the shooting, according to a social media post by the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas.

The Tarrant County District Attorney Office’s officer-involved shooting team was contacted due to the officer discharging his firearm. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
