An off-duty Dallas police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash in Hunt County on Tuesday, Jan. 7, authorities said.

The accident was reported about 5:20 p.m. on Texas 276, about 1.5 miles south of Union Valley and about 30 miles east of Dallas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS’ preliminary investigation found that a Honda Accord had stopped facing east on State Highway 276 while waiting to turn left into a private driveway.

The off-duty officer was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound when the driver of the Accord failed to yield the right-of-way and turned in front of the motorcycle, a DPS spokesperson said in a news release.

The officer, 29-year-old Gabriel Bixby, of Quinlan, was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Bixby had served with the Dallas Police Department since 2018. He was assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.

The 85-year-old driver of the Accord was injured and taken to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

The investigation of the collision is ongoing.
