Fort Worth police investigate killing of man shot by suspect who entered his home

Fort Worth police are investigating the killing of a man who was shot when someone entered his home late Tuesday, Jan. 7, officials said.

Officers responded to the house in the 2800 block of Avenue K, in east Fort Worth, shortly after 8 p.m. They found the resident with a gunshot wound to the his torso.

An unknown suspect had entered the home, confronted the man and shot him, according to police.

The victim was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in serious condition and died in the operating room shortly after 9 p.m.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the homicide victim as 49-year-old Harvey Lee Mitchell.

The shooter fled the area on foot, and no arrests have been made, police said.

Members of the Gang Unit responded to the scene, according to police, and the shooting is being actively investigated. The Gun Violence Unit is responsible for the follow-up investigation, police said.
