2 killed in fiery crash when 18-wheeler crosses onto wrong side of I-30 in Royse City
Two people were killed in a crash Monday morning when an 18-wheeler driving the wrong way on Interstate 30 in North Texas hit three cars, according to Royse City police.
Royse City police and firefighters were dispatched to the major accident scene just before 8:30 a.m. on eastbound I-30 at FM 35. A tractor-trailer that was traveling west crossed over onto the eastbound side of the interstate, causing the collision, police said in a news release.
One of the cars that was hit by the semi truck caught fire and was fully engulfed when first responders arrived, police said. Two people in that car died. They have not been identified.
Eastbound I-30 was closed to traffic between FM 35 and FM 2642 for much of the day during the investigation and cleanup, police said. The eastbound lanes reopened about 3:15 p.m., but traffic was still backed up on the interstate and side streets. Police asked residents to drive safely and be patient.
Westbound I-30 near the accident scene reopened about 11 a.m. Authorities also opened the eastbound I-30 service road between FM 35 and FM 2642 on Monday morning.
Royse City is about 65 miles east of Fort Worth.
