1 killed, 3 injured in crash on NE Loop 820 in Haltom City, authorities say

A pickup truck crashed into two cars that were parked along a Haltom City highway on Friday morning as multiple people dealt with a flat tire, injuring three — two severely — and killing a woman, police said.

The woman, who was inside one of the two cars, was pronounced dead on the scene, police said in a news release Friday morning. Two men who were helping to change the tire were taken to hospitals with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man who was driving the pickup was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Several agencies responded to the crash in the 5100 block of Northeast Loop 820 around 7:40 a.m., police said. Officers saw three vehicles that had been involved in a collision, police said, and were able to determine the series of events that led to the crash.

A brown Nissan Altima was parked in the inside shoulder of the highway with a flat tire, police said. In front of the car, a silver Ford Focus was also pulled over, and one of the occupants was outside of the vehicle trying to help the driver change a tire.

A white Ford F-150 was reportedly driving toward the group in the inside lane of the highway, and the pickup suddenly veered to the left toward them, police said. The driver told police he was reaching for a water bottle when he lost control of the truck.

The truck hit the back of the Nissan, causing it to launch into the air, police said. The front of the F-150 then came down on the back of the Ford Focus, police said, which “collapsed the passenger compartment.”

Investigators were on the scene of the crash Friday morning, police said.

The eastbound lanes of Northeast Loop 820 near Haltom Road were closed for around four hours following the crash, police said. They were re-opened as of around 12:45 p.m.

Traffic was being diverted around the crash site, police said.

The woman’s identity will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.
