2 boats crash on Lake Worth, critically injuring 13-year-old girl, authorities say

Two boats crashed into each other on Lake Worth late Wednesday night, causing a 13-year-old girl who was in the front of one of them to sustain critical injuries, authorities said on Thursday.

The girl was flown to Cook Children’s Medical Center with traumatic and possibly life-threatening injuries, according to MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky. An adult was also taken in an ambulance to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital with minor injuries, he said, and two other people with minor injuries were treated on-scene and released.

Capt. Cliff Swofford of the Texas Game Wardens told the Star-Telegram another teen girl was transported to a hospital in an ambulance. Zavadsky, however, said MedStar only transported the one adult, whose gender he couldn’t immediately provide.

Medics responded around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday to the 7500 block of Surfside Drive in Fort Worth, near where the bridge on the Jacksboro Highway runs over the lake, he said.

An accident occurred involving two boats, according to Swofford. One boat ran into another, striking a 13-year-old girl who had been in the front — or the bow — of the boat, he said.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, he said, and Game Wardens investigators were attempting to reconstruct what happened on Thursday. That includes interviewing all witnesses and all those involved.

“A decision concerning charges will be made after all facts are gathered,” Swofford said.
