Dozens of cows were killed Monday night near Interstate 30 in Arlington when a tractor-trailer carrying cattle overturned, police said.

Officers responded to the Baird Farm Road overpass shortly before 9:30 p.m. According to police, the driver misjudged how much space he had to turn at the intersection of the I-30 frontage road and Baird Farm Road. He ended up making a sudden turn, and the truck and trailer turned over.

The driver wasn’t injured, police said, but between 40-45 of the approximately 80 animals being transported were killed. One cow escaped from the trailer and was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The area was closed most of the night while crews worked to clear the scene but has since reopened.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office helped police unload and reload the surviving animals, officials said.
